DISCOVER NORTHEAST LOS ANGELES

The historic, eclectic and diverse communities of Northeast Los Angeles grew from the gentle valley and hillsides along the Arroyo Seco, stretching in between Downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Discover Northeast Los Angeles

The neighborhoods are now cross-cultural and dynamic, but much of their character can traced to Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Arts and Crafts Movement celebrated individualism, creativity and pride of craftsmanship as a rebuttal to the Industrial Revolution , and as a counterpoint to Victorian formality.

The spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement continues today as a vital and thriving Arts Community rooted in Northeast Los Angeles.

**The featured photo is a piece by assemblage artist Armando Arreola which will be presented at Avenue 50 Studio during its February exhibition, Circulo "Magico/Magical Circus" .

Opening Night Reception:  Saturday, February 12, 2011 from 7-11 pm

“I have always wanted to be a magician.  These small theaters allow me to play that role.”

The Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present its February exhibition, Circulo Magico/Magical Circus by assemblage artist Armando Arreola.  With material obsession, Armando Arreola creates small diorama theater scenes of magicians at work.  Among the 14 theaters, we see the sword swallower, the lady being sawed in half, and the woman levitated over fire– while the small audience delights in the magic of the magician.  We are drawn into the tiny magical world of Armando Arreola.  He obviously delights in assembling his dioramas (and probably smiles or laughs while creating them).  All would be upbeat, except for one factor:  smudged faces with matted hair adorns each participant. We’ve walked into Arreola’s slightly dark world – not bloody, not violent – a Ray Bradbury novel-like world. There is magic here, as we play voyeur peering through side windows, or from the top of the theater.  But isn’t that what originally a circus was supposed to be?  Strange, mysterious, other worldly.  Circulo Magico is actually very charming.  The children will love it, and so will adults.

Dia de los Muertos at Self Help Graphics

Dia de los Muertos honors beloved ancestors, family and friends who have passed on.

In the lands that are now known as Mexico and Central America, traditions of honoring the deceased with private altars laden with flowers, mememtos, food and drink date back many thousands of years.

When the Spanish Conquistadors came to this land, they attempted to eradicate the holiday celebration in their efforts to convert the indigenous people.

But The Day of the Dead would not die.  And in time, the old customs blended with the Catholic Holy Days of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2).  And by extension, in modern times,  All Hallows Eve (the eve of All Saints Day, "Halloween")

Self Help Graphics & Art in East Los Angeles has a 37 year tradition of hosting Dia de los Muetos celebrations.

November 2, at 4:00PM Day of the Dead Procession at Belvedere Park's Virgen de Guadalupe Mural located at the corner of Cesar Chavez Ave. & Mednik Avenue;

November 2, at 5:00 -11:00 PM Celebration at East Los Angeles Civic Center 4801 East 3rd Street, East L.A., CA 90022 featuring music, community altars, many food vendors and local arts & Craft vendors!

7th Annual Halloween and Mourning Tours & Scary Movie Night at Heritage Square

7th Annual Halloween and Mourning Tours & Scary Movie Night

On Saturday and Sunday, October 23rd and 24th, experience Halloween in a whole new light at Heritage Square Museum's Seventh Annual Halloween and Mourning Tours.

Discover the very different traditions surrounding death and mourning as they were practiced 100 years ago. Mourning Tours are made possible thanks to the support of sponsors like METRO, Los Angeles Family Magazine, 100.3 The Sound,  Pasadena Weekly and Citizen's Trust (a division of Citizens Bank). Additional support provided by Councilman Ed Reyes/CD1, Trader Joe's of South Pasadena, Superior Warehouse and Licha's Flowers.

This living history program puts you in the middle of a superstitious Victorian-era society where death was never far behind. Witness a funeral procession as they bury a loved one, visit a fortune teller, learn about hair jewelry and mourning attire and even join two men in arguing the merits of spirit photography! Also on hand for this year's festivities will be author Mark Daniel Wood. Mark is the Author of several titles, most recently Halloween Crafts-Eerily Elegant Décor (2001) and Create a Bewitched Fall-o-ween: 45 Projects for Decorating and Entertaining (2006). Mark will transform the 1887 John J. Ford residence into an authentic Victorian-esque haunted house. In so doing, he will demonstrate to visitors how to make period decorations. Mark will be on-hand to sign books.

On Sunday, October 24, the event adds family activities. Children can come in costume, make period crafts, receive a free pumpkin, listen to spooky stories by the San Gabriel Valley Storytellers and much more.

Also Sunday, Paranormal Investigators will share the results of their study of Heritage Square Museum. After all, for more than 40 years, people have claimed to hear, see and feel all manner of mysterious happenings at Heritage Square Museum. Whether it is the nature of the Victorian architecture, the historic furnishings and paintings on display or something all-together different, "ghost sightings" have occurred at the museum since its inception. On October 24th, those "sightings" will be denied...or confirmed!

Admission to the Halloween and Mourning tours are free for members, $10.00 for Adults, $8.00 for Seniors over 65, $5.00 for Children 6 to 12 years, and free for Children under 6. For more information about the program, call the museum offices from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at (323) 225-2700.

Due to periodic Caltrans Closures on the 110-Pasadena Frewway, we encourage everyone to take public transportation to the event. In fact, if you take the METRO GOLD LINE, we will even give you a free poster! If you are local, take your bicycle and we'll also give you a free poster.

Halloween and Mourning Movie Night to feature Body Snatcher (1945)
On the evening of Saturday, October 23, Heritage Square Museum will host its fourth annual Halloween and Mourning Movie Night. The evening is sponsored by Videotheque, the premier destination for classic and indie cinema.

Guests are invited to bring a picnic, blankets, chairs, and candy while enjoying classic scary movies at Heritage Square... if they dare. The scheduled feature is Body Snatcher, a 1945 horror classic starring Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi. The plot involves a ruthless doctor and his young prize student finding themselves continually harassed by a murderous supplier of illegal cadavers. Considered one of Boris Karloff's best performances, the film is based on a classic 1884 short story by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Guests are encouraged to wear warm clothing. Beverages and popcorn will be available for purchase. Admission to the Halloween and Mourning Movie Night is free for Museum members and $10.00 for the general public. The gates will open at 7 p.m. for picnics with the show starting at dusk.

Bring the kids for Safe Haven Trick or Treating
Bring your kids for more treats on Halloween inside the safe confines of the museum grounds. Children 1 to 12 years of age, with parent accompaniment, may come in costume and receive sweet treats from our costumed interpreters stationed at each building. Halloween treats will be available from 4 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Admission price is $5 for Adults and $2 for children 6 to 12. Children under 6 are free. Free for members.

BMZ draws upon the style of traditional Cajun and Creole musicians, and the influences of the blues and New Orleans artists of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s to create a blend of music designed for dancing.  Zydeco is a mix of rock ’n roll, blues, Caribbean and R&B music. But it’s not rock ’n roll or blues music, it’s zydeco. "

The genre-defying artist pulls together heavy doses of traditional jazz, psych, electronic and hip-hop, with progressive melodies and devastating drums into a rich pot of sound. His techniques create harmony between genres with the blending of obscure samples with analog and digital compositions."

Their Rights and Nothing Less: Commenorating the 90th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage

We are very proud to be a co-sponsor of this exhibit, "Their Rights and Nothing Less: Commenorating the 90th Anniversary of Women's Sufferage" at Heritage Square Museum:

Heritage

Opening Reception is Saturday June 19, (Heritage Square members remember to RSVP for Saturday's opening reception (hosted by Panera Bread) by calling (323) 225-2700 ext. 223. The reception is from 4 to 6:30 PM.

As the only museum in Southern California commemorating this momentous anniversary, we hope everyone will visit the museum to learn about the early years of the suffrage movement, the philosophies and attitudes of the times and the individual stories that made the fight for women's equality so interesting.

A special section of the exhibit will be dedicated entirely to the efforts of women in Los Angeles, who led the fight for equality 9 years before its ratification at the National level. You can find a brief desciption of one of the women featured in the exhibit on the Heritage Square Museum blog.

The year 2010 marks the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution giving women the right to vote. More accurately, the language does not reference women in the affirmative; what it does is not deny the right to vote based upon gender.“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.” The 19th Amendment was ratified August 18, 1920 by Tennessee, by a one-vote margin.

Of course, the fight for women’s rights began much, much earlier. In 1792, AVindication of the Rights of Woman: With Strictures on Political and Moral Subjects was published by Mary Wollstonecraft, which responded to an issue even more basic and immediate than voting rights—the right—indeed the necessity for women to receive an education. Although almost inconceivable to think of now, this was considered a radical position which provoked a dramatic, although not necessarily negative, response. Starting with this simple idea, women have been fighting for equal rights ever since.

Curated by Mitzi March Mogul, Their Rights and Nothing Less will take a critical look at the incredible effort it took to gain that right and will include original artifacts from the early years of the struggle. Including ephemera and artifacts from a never-before-seen private collection, the exhibit is a must for every woman...and man.

Entrance is included with museum admission (free for members, $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for children 12 and under). Visit any Friday, Saturday orSunday between 12 pm and 4 pm. The exhibit is up through September 26th.

The exhibit runs through September 26th and is made possible thanks to sponsors Bob Taylor Properties, Planned Parenthood of Pasadena, 9 to 5 Working Women Los Angeles, the Glendale Printing Center. You can also become a Friend of Suffrage by making a donation in any amount through our new facebook cause page to support the exhibit Their Rights and Nothing Less: A Celebration of Women's Suffrage.

Rubén Martínez is a fixture on L.A.'s cultural & political landscape. Writer, musician, spoken-word artist, intellectual, activist-he likes stirring the pot, mixing the genres, breaking down the borders.

Joe "City" Garcia is Rubén's longtime musical partner, conjuring vibes as varied as flamenco and r&b on acoustic & electric guitars. John Schayer and his blues-inflected bass have livened up acts like Bob Welch and Jay Gordon. Drummer Ruben Gonzalez is a native of East L.A. and of its music scene, including a stint with R&B legends The Blazers. Dennis Gurwell is a connoisseur of all things Americana, bringing his zydeco-flavored accordeón.

Lummis Day takes its name from Charles Fletcher Lummis, who joined the L.A. Times as the newspaper's first city editor in 1876. A prolific writer and photographer, Lummis was also one of the city's first librarians, founded the Southwest Museum and helped introduce the concept of multi-culturalism to Southern California. Simply place bags filled with nonperishable food items like canned meats, fish, soup, juice and vegetables, and pasta, cereal and rice next to your mailbox on Saturday, May 8th.*

Your letter carrier will pick up the bags and deliver them to your local food bank.

“Testimonies Two - Contemporary Ex-Votos” -- Artists’ reception -- Saturday evening, December 12, at Avenue 50 Studio

The Avenue 50 Studio is proud to present Testimonies Two – Contemporary Ex Votos.  Curator Raoul De la Sota has assembled a group of artists for a special exhibit focusing on the Mexican-rooted art form of the ex-voto.

RTlessersaints5_000

Lesser Saint No. 5 – Richard Turner

Curated by Raoul De la Sota

Ex-votos historically were devotional visual offerings to the Church for a miraculous cure or for some intervention by a specific religious figure that prevented harm or death.  In 16th century Spain they were painted directly onto the interior church walls as murals depicting the miracle.  The paintings themselves were called Milagros or miracles.  In 18th and 19th century Mexico they became the source of income for itinerant artists who depicted in their paintings some sort of miracle.  These artists, often academically untrained, created their works at the request of families, painting with inexpensive oils on whatever small scraps of material was convenient and cheap, most often tin or wood.  The works ranged from the charmingly rustic to the aesthetically profound. The works were then in turn donated by the family to a nearby church as gratitude for its intervention.  In the 20th century the craft continued but with less religiosity and more pleas for financial help or for material goods.  In all cases there was always a narrative text painted onto the surface that described the event and the stated gratitude of the donor.  Frida Kahlo was a modern artist who admired and patterned some of her work after these forms.

The present-day work by these diverse artists involves personal stories, narratives of gratitude and portrayals of visual histories. Some are graphic representations of difficult times while others are simple tokens of thanks for life’s pleasures.  In form they are sculptures, assemblages, collages, photographs and paintings.  They are no longer directed to a religious institution but rather are personal messages directed to a contemporary audience.

The exhibit opens with an artists’ reception on Saturday evening, December 12,, 2009 from 7 to 10 p.m. and closes with an artists’ panel discussion on Sunday, January 24, 2010.

Where: Starts at the Lummis Home, 200 E. Avenue 43, Highland Park, CA 90031
When: November 22, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Edem-elesh

As part of the Recovery Discovery Tour,  artist Edem Elesh will open his home studio in Mount Angelus, a hilltop neighborhood in Highland Park.

From an absolutearts.com review:

The work of Los Angeles based painter, Edem Elesh, finds itself in the murky waters of the viewer's unconscious.Fantastical, dream-like and dystopian, Elesh's imagery is set in our postmodern time, at an intersection where the subject matter of various sorts has been cut loose from it's origins and dropped onto the foreign occupied space of the canvas. With an irreverence and narrative approach to working, each subject has been abandoned and ultimately left to stake its claim in a new and unfamiliar territory. When asked about the conception and drive of an individual painting, Elesh straightforwardly replies that, "Everyday situations of existence" are always where his subject matter remains fertile.

ARROYO ARTS COLLECTIVE RECOVERY DISCOVERY NOVEMBER 22: STEVEN ANDERSON IS BACK!

Steven Anderson last opened his home studio on the Arroyo Arts Collective Discovery tour in 2003.  After a five year hiatus, Steven's home studio high in the hills of Eagle Rock will again be a featured destination on the tour.

From the artist's web site

Steven L. Anderson was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1971, and raised by a family of creative environmentalists. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1988 and the following year attended the University of Michigan with the plans of being a "renaissance man." It was here that he began to make small collages using an approach of appropriation and re-contextualization that would serve as a basis for his creative process.

A post-graduate slacker/LSD experience in the newly split Czech Republic convinced Steven to follow a path through the arts, leading him to the Art Institute of Chicago to train as a painter, printmaker and graphic designer. It was here that he met and fell in love with his wife Liz (Department of Graphic Sciences), his life-long love and inspiration. Agnes Anderson joined the family in 2007.

Steven's career as an artist has been a cycle of collaborative and individual production, focusing on the nature of power and the power of nature. In 1998 he joined Cakewalk Magazine as co-publisher; designing, editing and raising money for issues 2-6. Steven has also been a driving force in 2004's October Surprise curatorial project in Northeast Los Angeles. Other fruitful collaborations have included Fat Farmer Bob and His Colourful Crazy Beard (2008-), Fuz Fon (1999-2001) and Chicago's Free the Real World Coalition (2001). Steven has art-directed and designed for In These Times (1998-2001) and WhiteWalls (1999-2003) magazines in Chicago, and the Center for the Study of Political Graphics (2003-04) and 1105 Media inc. (2003-current) in Los Angeles, among others.

The Andersons currently reside in Northeast Los Angeles with cats Big D. and Kittenhead Jenkins.

6:45PM Announcements
7:00PM Program

How to Avoid Having to Trash Your Stuck, Leaky Windows
Presentation by Ed and Batya Sanchez of Window Restoration and Repair, Inc.
The Highland Park Heritage Trust is sponsoring a talk by Ed Sanchez of Window Restoration and Repair.  This event is a must for anyone considering the replacement of windows, especially on older homes with original wood or steel windows.  Mr. Sanchez will talk about how to successfully preserve and repair wood and steel windows.  The approach is proven to help retain the value of a house, maintain its architectural features, and save money.

7:30PM Annual Election Meeting
Election committee will present a suggested list of Board of Directors for the 2010 Fiscal Year.  Nominations are welcome from the floor.  All members in good standing are eligible to run for the Board of Directors and to vote.

8:30PM Adjournment

About the speaker:   Ed Sanchez originally began working in the window replacement business in 1983, and opened his own window replacement company in 1986.  He lost faith in replacement windows because they didn’t last as long as the originals and he decided to follow his inclination toward historic preservation.  Ed and his long time friend, Scott Goldfarb, started the new company Window Restoration and Repair in 2000.   The unusual offering of this company has led to articles in many local papers such as the Glendale News Press, Pasadena Star News, Larchmont Chronicle, and Press Telegram and recommendations in the Daily Variety and Cottages and Bungalows.   Many of the articles can be read in their entirety in the press section of the company website:  www.window-restoration-repair.com  Window Restoration and Repair has done restoration work for the Bembridge House, the Hotel Laguna, the historic building that houses the Cheesecake Factory in Pasadena on Fair Oaks and Colorado, the original country club for the Country Club Park district in Los Angeles and many other designated historic buildings.
