Arroyo Seco Recreation Culture & the Arts Newsletter 46 01.11.07

Arroyo Seco Recreation Culture & the Arts Newsletter
Issue 46 01.11.07

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Where Will the Chicana/o Artists Be???

The irony is that my Where are the Chicana/o artists newsletter originally started in response to the abrupt closing of Self Help Graphics & Art. Here we are a year and a half  later and again the Chicano Arte Mundo is facing challenges here in LA. The following is an email In part from Luis Rodriguez of Tia Chucha’s:

Tia Chucha's must move--but our Spirit, Creativity, & Unity are intact: Just after the holidays, Tia Chucha's Cafe & Cultural Center was served with a notice forcing us to move. We have to leave by February 28, 2007. A powerfully energized & thriving bookstore/cafe/performance space/ cultural center is to be replaced by high-tech laundry machines. The laundry company is apparently investing $8 million in the strip mall, something we can't compete with.

Our strategy this year includes implementing a fundraising plan with a 5th Anniversary event at Tia Chucha's on February 17. We will also have another "Celebrating Words: Written, Performed & Sung" festival at Sylmar Park on May 19. & we have been approved to do a benefit event for Tia Chucha's at the Ford Amphitheater in Hollywood on July 29. Sign up for our e-mail newsletter here on our website up at the top, or call 818-362-7060 for more information.

--Luis J. Rodriguez Co-founder & Creative Director, Tia Chucha's Cafe & Centro Cultural

How You Can Help!!! *Come into the cafe & sign the petition!!! *Attend a community meeting held at Pacoima Beautiful located at 11243 Glenoaks Blvd, Suite 1, Pacoima, CA on Wednesday, January 17@ 12 noon. Voice your opinion & let the city of Pacoima know that you support Tia Chucha's & request that they consider us as a prospective bussiness for the new shopping center being built on Paxton St. on the old Price Pfister Factory site. *Volunteer!!! We will need assistance at our Anniversary Celebration & with the transition to our new temporary space. Interested volunteers can email Tia Chucha's at chuchamail@aol.com or call 818.362.7060 & ask how you can help!!! *Donate & re-invest in your community!!! Donations like yours will assist Tia Chucha's in it's struggle & continued survival. Silverio Pelayo, Tia Chucha's Cafe Cultural www.tiachucha.com

And what is even more ironic, is that in that “oh so looong ago” moment, the first public meeting that was held about the issues at Self Help Graphics & Art, was at Avenue 50 Studio, another Chicano icon. And now, they in my own backyard in NorthEastLA, along with the Acorn Gallery of the Arroyo Arts Collective (AAC), are possibly in jeopardy of losing their space. At a recent board meeting (January 9) of the Highland Park Historic Preservation Overlay Zone (HPOZ) the following was on the agenda:

4. Certificate of Appropriateness & Certificate of Compatibility:

….

C. 131-5 N. Avenue 50 - (Not Listed) DIR-2007-XXXX-CCMP; Returning from 12/12/06; Demolition of ex. bldg., consult w/Fire Dept. on access, egress for fire trucks. Sam Suliman.

After they had presented their case for need for demolition of building to comply with the needs of the fire department for access & egress, the public had their chance to speak. The first to pop up was Robert (Bob) Squires of Charlotta’s Passion, another Chicano Arte gallery. He was very eloquent, however, the day (night) really went to Carmela Gomes, President, Highland Park Heritage Trust. She presented the Trust’s statement on the matter, speaking against the demolition as, though, the building is not listed explained at the meeting, that this building is of architectural importance to the community and should be considered a Contributing Structure.  She then handed the Board the written version of the statement. The Board agreed that it should be a Contributing Structure. Others spoke about Avenue 50 Studio, but the Board can only deal with structural issues and so those comments were tabled before Brian Mallman, of NELAarts.org, could speak. Then the Board called upon by Justine Leong, a historic preservation architect of the Architectural Resources Group (ARG), Pasadena. She agreed with Ms Gomes regarding the preservation of the building. The Registrar and Representative for Recreation, Culture & the Arts, Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council, commented that the new owner, as a prudent buyer, should have been investigating these things during escrow & not confronting them now.

Luckily, for all concerned – the Board didn’t have to make a decision at the moment – the owner didn’t have to face not being able to demolish the building – the community will have a chance for input - hopefully, there can be a compromise as was suggested by both the Board & some of the commenters such as modifying the building plans to accommodate the structure – Gerald Gubatan, Chief Planning Deputy, First Council District (Ed Reyes), was asked to comment. His bottom line was that the decision should be tabled for 30 days while the parties have a chance to seek a compromise solution. Additional comments, from the Board & others, mentioned studies that were relevant to the issue, but not within the Board’s purview. One important study could be an environmental impact one, especially as to traffic issues.

Thanks also goes to Cheryl Johnson of Bob Taylor Properties, Inc, who first posted the notice of the hearing at the NortheastLA@yahoogroups.com as follows: “Avenue 50 Studio has been a leader in community outreach, and cross cultural understanding. The 1925 (2) masonry building leased by Avenue 50 Studio was recently acquired by a new owner, and plans have been filed to demolish the structure. Although the building is a recognized icon in the neighborhood, it does not have the protection of being listed as a "Contributing Structure" by the Cultural Heritage Commission. The next hearing before the Highland Park Historic Perservation Overlay Zone Board takes place Tuesday, January 9, 2007, 6:30 PM at Ramona Hall Recreation Center, 4580 Figueroa Street, Los Angeles 90065 (Beside Sycamore Grove Park). Here is a copy of the Public Notice of Hearing: http://www.nelalive.net/nelalive/files/131ave50.pdf” Without this notice many of us would have not known about the meeting and would not have been able to show our support.

As Bob Squires wrote in a recent email to nelalist@yahoogroups.com “Avenue 50 & the AAC may even benefit from a move to a different facility. What I perhaps find the most exciting is to realize that so many of the partipants in this discussion are willing to leave their computers & work & devote time & effort to help facilitate this difficult transition. That you are willing to do more than simply post your opinions, which is such an easy task, speaks volumes about your wonderful community spirit. …”

So what do you do?

For starters this weekend is Second Saturday Gallery Night in NorthEastLA (NELA) and Avenue 50 Studio has a wonderful new exhibit opening called Mitos y Leyendas/Myths & Legends, which would be worth your while to visit and demonstrate your support of the two arts institutions housed in this culturally significant building. IF you live in the area to Tia Chucha’s Cafe Cultural Bookstore do what you can of the options they’ve suggested and/or visit there on Saturday for An Evening of Spoken Word w/San Diego's Best.

And, as long as your visiting Avenue 50 Studio, you can visit some of the other galleries on the tour, either by car or by bike as part of the Spoke(n) Art Bike Ride. The participating NorthEastLA galleries are Art Studio C, Avenue 50 Studio, Cactus Gallery, Carlotta's Passion, Center for the Arts Eagle Rock, David Patton LA, Future Studio, MorYork Gallery, Rock Rose Gallery, Space Ark Gallery, Sugarbutterbex, Toros Pottery &Young Art. Note: Blue Chips has closed. Of special note are the Framed Fibers: A Study in Abstraction Exhibit at That Yarn Store, the Mind Made Housing:  Ed Coolidge Solo Exhibit at Sugarbutterbex, the Coffee Mail Art Show: Curated by Ted Meyer, assisted by Omar Mejia at Future Studio and the Irene Carranza: New Works Solo Exhibit at Carlotta's Passion Fine Art. For a real fun time try either the Chistian Vega Rojo Going Away Party & Exhibit at Cactus Gallery & Gifts or Avant Garde Art, Music & Fun at Space Ark Gallery. And you just might run into me as I’m tooling along on my newly repaired Schwinn classic, just don’t literally run into me, please.

Actually you can start on Friday with a preview of the NorthEastLA galleries at MorYork Gallery for Snapshot:NELA A Benefit Show & Party.

Elyria Canyon – Preservation/Enhancement/Celebration of Nature

Third Saturdays

Saturday, January 20, 9a – 12noon

From Lynnette Kampe, Mt. Washington Assoc. Newsletter

The Natural Calendar: On December 22, the winter solstice, I considered it a special treat to watch the sun set over the ocean. Since I work in El Segundo, right next to the beach, this wasn't too hard to arrange & for some reason it was important to me to take a moment to celebrate the shortest day of the year. More sunshine to come! Just standing still for a moment to watch the sun disappear gave me a recharge. For some reason the clockwork of the universe seems that much more evident at such times & there's a reassurance in feeling a part of it.

For 2007 I invite you to pencil in the third Saturday of each month, from 9 AM to noon, to enjoy the company of good people & work off some holidays cookies as we embark in a New Year of preserving & enhancing the natural treasures of Mount Washington. Back in 1996 a UCLA Extension Advanced Environmental Analysis & Planning class proposed a calendar of workdays & celebrations for Elyria Canyon based on the natural seasons & community customs. This calendar was presented in a report titled "Shaping the Future of Elyria Canyon"that presents a compelling call for action. Each month Mount Washington Association & Mount Washington Homeowners Alliance members will be encouraged to join a modified plan alternating between Elyria & Rainbow Canyons. January will be Elyria, & February Rainbow, & so forth.

Feeling a part of nature is reassuring & we're so lucking to have so much natural beauty at hand. This feeling on connection can happen at any time, but is more likely if we slow down a bit & spend some time taking in the natural beauty that surrounds us. Call or email me (
lynnette@pacbell.net) if you would like to get email reminders, help plan beautification projects or to request a copy of the report.

NELA Natural Foods Co-op: Interested in purchasing healthy, affordable organic foods? NELA has a natural foods co-op. They've been operating for more than 2 years. Their primary source is the large health food distributor Azure Standard, based in Oregon. They also get fresh organic produce from Better Life & raw milk products from Organic Pastures. The co-op doesn't have a physical site (yet). It is organized like a buying club. Local families order direct from the sources on a monthly or weekly schedule. The Co-op organizes pickup/distribution sites and sharing via phone and email.

Co-op members often share things like lemons from a backyard tree, favorite recipes, sourdough cultures, homemade soap, or information about food issues. They arrange to split large orders (10 gallons of honey, a case of peanut butter etc.). It is a growing community and is open to new ideas about accessing healthy affordable food for everyone. They have a Yahoo group for notices, questions and sharing.

This exhibit features sculptures by Tomás Owen & Drawings by J. Michael Walker. If myths & legends are the stories that have been passed down for generations, Owen & Walker have created new – & reconfigured other – legends & myths.  A mixing of real & imaginary characters, places & events populate the gallery & draw us into an atmospheric world of fantasy & supernatural beings.

Tomás Owen sculpts moody yet playful characters in ceramic stoneware.  In one piece, the mythological satyr, Tomás recreates this icon, energizing its classical form with movement & almost perceptible sound.

J. Michael Walker’s drawings assemble mythic imagery & tradition to offer atmospheric, imaginary worlds. In “The Old Moon Remembers” he builds a magical castle in a mysterious landscape; careful reflection informs that this is Cholula, where the Spaniards built a great cathedral atop a pre-Colombian temple.  The full moon as indigenous visage gazes over lands once possessed, still affected.

Perhaps no other Latina artist in Los Angeles is so visible & invisible at the same time. Perhaps no other is so commercially viable & not commercial. And perhaps no other artist is as important to the expression of being Latina in a multicultural world without treating the paintbrush as a political hammer. On the contrary, whatever "it" is, she nails it. Although the color and strokes convey a world somewhere between Diego Rivera and Edvard Munch, a world between Marc Chagall's and Georgia O'Keefes', that world is distinctly Carranza's. She creates her works using oil, acrylic, charcoal & pastel on canvas, paper & wood. Since 1997, she has developed a body of work that is connected by the notion of feminine mystique & the interpretation of what makes a human "feminine". They are tales with allegorical references to death, beauty, innocence, wisdom & strength.

An exhibition from The Center for the Study of Political Graphics shown alongside ten new serigraphs by Shizu Saldamando, Rafael Navarro, Sherm, Asyl’m, Lalo Alcaraz, Lora Norton, Carlos Saldaña, Erika Cho, Javier Hernanadez & Douglas Miles; Jose Alpuche, Master Printer

Give me your tired, your poor; Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free . . .The enormous disparity between the eloquent promise of the Statue of Liberty & the recent attacks against immigrants is enormous. Immigration to the United States varies broadly—who comes, why, from where & when is emphasized in posters that speak to ongoing efforts to make immigrants’ reality closer to Emma Lazarus's aspiration. Yet from the Irish & Chinese in the nineteenth century to the Mexicans & Middle Easterners of the twenty-first centuries, discrimination based on race, class, language & culture has unfortunately been consistent. Whether the reason for migration is to escape war, seek asylum from persecution, or pursue better economic opportunities, leaving one’s family, friends & home is never easy & the posters in this exhibition present the human side of this wrenching experience.

LA Women: A Record of Experience

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 13, 4 - 9p

The Studio for Southern California History, 525 Alpine Street, Suite 103, LA, CA

January 13 - May 31

Inspired by the countless women who have shaped & continue to make local history, this exhibit celebrates women who have made a difference in the history of So Cal through struggle, innovation & compassion for her fellow human beings. Sister Karen Boccalero will be remembered & honored in this exhibition of women who made a difference in the history of So Cal.

LA Women profiles activists & pioneers who challenged the status quo in order to bring social justice or appreciation of the world around her. This exhibit borrows photographs & video from local & national archives as well as oral histories from the Studio's collection to illustrate the powerful & often under-acknowledged sphere of women's history.

It features a 30' Community Quilt composed of blocks created by local residents. Each block represents a significant contribution to local women's history. In addition to traditional blocks, the Community Quilt includes multimedia blocks that integrate the Studio's oral history collection. The Studio for So Cal History is intended to be a participatory space & there are ways for visitors to write their own personal history or other items into their Timeline that includes global, national, state & local women's history.

LA Women celebrates the 35th anniversary of the 1972 art installation Womanhouse; through an Interactive Doll House that asks viewers the same sorts of questions artists grappled with in the piece's original incarnation. Have issues changed for girls & women today? What would 2007's Womanhouse express?

Art Through Sports...Marc Smith & Travis Craven

Artist’s Reception: Saturday, January 13. 6 - 10p

jFerrari Gallery, 3015 Glendale Blvd, Atwater Village, CA

January 13 - February 3

323.877.5542 jazmin@jferrarigallery.com www.jferrarigallery.com

Americans grow up knowing they have choices & many of them choose to follow their passions. However, there are those who have many passions & the choice is not an easy one to make. Luckily for artists Travis Craven & Marc Smith synergism was their first choice. Marc & Travis have known & encouraged each other for 15 years. Both coming from childhoods strongly influenced by team sports, they immediately connected with one another's desire to express the feeling of sports & athletics in their art. It is important to these two artists that there is not a literal reproduction of athletics painted on a canvas or sculpted. They enjoy a beautiful synchronization of their passions for art & the human form in athletics & are excited to share their newest expressions of art form at their two-man show. Marc Smith will debut his "Colortree of Poetree" series of paintings & Travis Craven will exhibit new stone carvings.

Jim Thomson, Founder & Executive Director of PCA, will be speaking at the opening. A portion of the proceeds from art sales on the evening of the reception will be donated to Positive Coaching Alliance. PCA is a non-profit organization based at Stanford University with the mission to transform youth sports so sports can transform youth.

DISCOVER NORTHEAST LOS ANGELES

The historic, eclectic and diverse communities of Northeast Los Angeles grew from the gentle valley and hillsides along the Arroyo Seco, stretching in between Downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Discover Northeast Los Angeles

The neighborhoods are now cross-cultural and dynamic, but much of their character can traced to Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Arts and Crafts Movement celebrated individualism, creativity and pride of craftsmanship as a rebuttal to the Industrial Revolution , and as a counterpoint to Victorian formality.

The spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement continues today as a vital and thriving Arts Community rooted in Northeast Los Angeles.
